The Sib-TREES project proposal is a joint initiative from the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (Ispra, Italy) and the International Forest Institute (Moscow, Russia). The project aims to improve the understanding and knowledge of current conditions and the evolution of the Siberian forest in the context of International Conventions, in particular in the framework of the Kyoto Protocol to the UN framework convention on climate change. The project’s main objectives are to establish a system for Siberian forest monitoring through the creation of a dedicated forest information system. New products have to be developed to meet the requirements of the Kyoto protocol and full carbon accounting, and will have practical implications for the management of one of the World’s key natural resources and associated industries. The proposal foresees the establishment of an open network of Institutions in Russia and in Europe which will work together to deliver the system.
